Ollie is an app that brings skateboarders from all around the world together on one platform.
Inspired by the Pokemon Go app, Ollie brings a gamified form of social media for skateboarders to connect, share their tips, tricks, and challenge one another.
THE CHALLENGE was to create a sense of community as well as a space for learning between skateboarders around the world of all ages. We conducted in-depth research on our target market to understand their wants and needs, their aesthetics, what the assumptions were about their community, and how true those assumptions were. We spoke to skaters to better understand what they wanted from a product and test our product with them.
THE PRODUCT allows users to play the game SKATE with other skaters anywhere around the world. Users would be randomly matched with other users who were ready to play and would send videos back and forth on their own time until a player won the game. They could add friends or choose from a list of players, earning achievements that could then be redeemed in real life at local affiliated skate stores. The app also features a map where users could drop pins to indicate skate parks and skate shops, and recommend trick spots for others. Pins could also be redeemed through achievements earned from games. By combining these components, we hoped to foster community locally, as well as connect skaters all over the world.
IN RETROSPECT, this project was one of my first projects with such a large team (12 total members). We used a team dynamic resembling agile, scrum-style management, which greatly helped our overall collaboration throughout the project. This gave me an insight to this kind of work environment which would help prepare me for a future workplace.
